This is another one of those hotly contested, and disputed titles.

There are many towns, cities, and boroughs which lay claim to this and it really depends on the interpretation of the question. Do small villages count ? Does ‘Per Person’ include those under the legal drinking age ?

These factors make it a difficult question to answer and are the reason for so many places around the country disputing the fact and fighting over added tourism.
Some of the self-proclaimed contenders include : Aberdeen, Glasgow, St Albans, Bollington, Weymouth, Witney and Saffron Walden.

Using figures released in 2008 we can only give an approximation of the top few candidates for the title ..

  • Maningtree, Essex : 5 pubs and 900 people = 180 people per pub
  • Otley, West Yorkshire : 21 pubs and 15,000 people = 714 people per pub
  • Brighton and Hove : 278 pubs and 250,000 people = 899 people per pub
  • Manchester : 450 pubs and 464,400 people = 1032 people per pub
  • Beeston, Nottinghamshire : 18 pubs and 21,000 people = 1167 people per pub
